Parental Leave for Fathers in Germany: Your Guide to Time, Money and Rights

Yes, fathers in Germany have the right to take parental leave (Elternzeit) and receive parental allowance (Elterngeld). But many dads are still unsure when and how to apply, how much money they’ll get, and if it’s even possible with a foreign passport or if they just moved (or will move) to Germany.

What Is Elternzeit for Fathers?

Elternzeit is unpaid leave from your job to care for your child. Every parent in Germany—mothers and fathers—can take it. You don’t lose your job while you’re on Elternzeit, and your job is protected by law.

Fathers can take up to 3 years of Elternzeit per child. Most take 2 months to get the extra partner bonus in the Elterngeld system.

👉 Important: You must tell your employer at least 7 weeks in advance if you want to take Elternzeit. You don’t need permission, just notification.

What Is Elterngeld and How Much Can a Father Get?

Elterngeld is money from the government to replace part of your salary during parental leave. It’s meant to make it easier for parents to reduce or stop working.

There are 3 types:

  • Basic Elterngeld – up to 12 months (or 14 with partner bonus)
  • ElterngeldPlus – lower monthly amount, but for double the time
  • Partnership Bonus – 2 to 4 extra months if both parents work 24–32 hrs/week

You get 65%–100% of your previous net income. If your net income is low, you get more.

Example: What Can a Father Receive?

Let’s say you earn €2,500 net/month before the baby is born. You want to take 2 months of Elternzeit.

TypeAmount per MonthTotal for 2 Months
Basic Elterngeld~€1,625~€3,250

If you decide to work part-time during parental leave, ElterngeldPlus may fit better.

Is It Worth It for Fathers?

Yes! Studies show children benefit when both parents are involved early. Many employers also support fathers taking time off, especially for 2 months. It strengthens your family and gives your partner a real break, too.

And financially? If you plan ahead and choose the right months, you lose less money than you think, especially if your partner also takes Elterngeld.

How to Plan Elternzeit as a Father

  1. Talk to your partner
Plan who takes which months. You can overlap, alternate, or take turns.
  2. Inform your employer
Give at least 7 weeks’ notice. Use simple wording:
“I would like to take Elternzeit from [date] to [date] for the care of my child.”
  3. Apply for Elterngeld
After the birth, you apply to your local Elterngeldstelle. Our free Form-Filling Quiz makes it easy: you answer questions, and we create a personal info sheet with everything you need for your application.
  4. Submit the required documents
You’ll need ID, birth certificate, salary statements, and possibly proof from your employer or health insurance.

What If I’m Not German?

You can still take Elternzeit and receive Elterngeld if:

✅ You live in Germany with your child
✅ You have a valid residence permit with work permission
✅ You are employed or were recently employed before the birth

If you’re an EU citizen, it’s usually very simple. If you’re from outside the EU (e.g., family visa, work visa, Blue Card), we help you check your status in our free Eligibility Quiz.

📍 Living abroad but planning to move to Germany?
You must move before applying. Elterngeld is only paid if you and your child live in Germany.

Can I work part-time?
Yes. You can work up to 32 hours per week while on Elternzeit and still receive ElterngeldPlus.
