Elterngeld for self-employed parents is calculated based on your average net profit from your business in the calendar year before the birth of your child. This is known as the Bemessungszeitraum (calculation period). Your net profit is your income after expenses, but before taxes.
How Much Elterngeld Will You Receive?
- Basic Elterngeld: You receive 65% to 67% of your net profit, with a maximum of €1,800 per month. Low-income earners (below €1,240 net) receive a higher percentage of up to 100%.
- ElterngeldPlus: Half the amount of Basic Elterngeld, but for double the duration.
- Partnership Bonus: Extra ElterngeldPlus months if both parents work part-time (24-32 hours per week) for at least 4 months.

How Elterngeld is Calculated for Self-Employed
For self-employed parents, the calculation is based on your net profit from the calendar year before the birth year. This means if your child is born in 2025, your Elterngeld will be calculated using your 2024 profit.
| Year | Gross Income (Revenue) | Business Expenses | Net Profit | Elterngeld Percentage | Estimated Elterngeld |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | €60,000 | €20,000 | €40,000 | 65% | €26,000 / 12 = €2,166* |
| 2024 | €30,000 | €5,000 | €25,000 | 67% | €16,750 / 12 = €1,396 |
| 2024 | €15,000 | €2,000 | €13,000 | 75% | €9,750 / 12 = €813 |
| 2024 | €10,000 | €1,000 | €9,000 | 100% | €9,000 / 12 = €750 |
*Note: The maximum Elterngeld is €1,800 per month.
Example Calculation:
- John is a self-employed graphic designer with a net profit of €36,000 in 2024.
- His monthly net profit is €3,000 (€36,000 ÷ 12).
- His Elterngeld rate is 65%, so his Elterngeld is 65% of €3,000 = €1,950.
- Since the maximum is €1,800, his Elterngeld is capped at €1,800 per month.

Top Strategies to Maximize Your Elterngeld
1. Increase Your Profit in the Calculation Year
- Your Elterngeld depends on your net profit in the previous calendar year.
- Increase your profit by:
- Issuing more invoices before year-end.
- Reducing unnecessary expenses.
- Timing large expenses for the following year.
2. Delay Major Business Expenses
- Expenses such as new equipment or software can reduce your net profit.
- If possible, delay these expenses until after the calculation year.
3. Optimize Your Income Structure
- If you are married, consider switching your spouse to Steuerklasse III (Tax Class III) for a higher net income. This can also impact your household’s financial situation positively.
- If you have multiple sources of income, focus on maximizing the income from self-employment for the calculation period.
4. Use ElterngeldPlus if You Continue Working Part-Time
- ElterngeldPlus allows you to continue working part-time (up to 32 hours/week) while receiving benefits.
- Example: Instead of €1,800 Basic Elterngeld for 12 months, you can receive €900 ElterngeldPlus for 24 months.
5. Explore the Partnership Bonus
- If both parents work 24-32 hours per week for at least 4 months, you can receive a Partnership Bonus in ElterngeldPlus.
- This works even if you are self-employed.
