What Is Elterngeld?
Elterngeld (Parental Allowance) is a benefit from the German government to support parents during the first months of a baby’s life. It replaces part of your income if you stop or reduce work to care for your child.
You can get Elterngeld if:
- You live in Germany with your baby
- You care for the child yourself
- You work no more than 32 hours/week while receiving Elterngeld
Even if you had no income before the baby, you can still apply.
Types of Elterngeld
There are three options:
| Type | Duration | Monthly Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Elterngeld | Up to 12 months (14 with partner) | 65–100% of your net income |
| ElterngeldPlus | Double duration (up to 24–28 months) | Half the Basic Elterngeld |
| Partnership Bonus | Extra 2–4 months (both parents work part-time) | ElterngeldPlus level |
